President Yoweri Museveni has urged Ugandans to leverage tourism as a powerhouse for boosting household income ,calling it alucrative alternative for those with limited land for commercial agriculture
Speaking at the 2026 World Tourism Day celebrations at Mbale Secondary School Grounds—themed “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”—the President emphasized that tourism’s massive economic multiplier effect outpaces traditional sectors like coffee by feeding directly into local accommodation, transport, food, and entertainment.
Unlike the global coffee market, tourism drives a vast chain of local economic activities, creating immediate opportunities for cultural enterprises and service providers.
President Museveni officially commissioned the Mbale Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (Mbale Zoo), built by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to anchor conservation education and regional tourism in the Elgon Sub-region.
Beyond tourism, the President pushed residents to exploit Uganda’s four core wealth-creation sectors: commercial agriculture, manufacturing/artisanship, services, and ICT.
The President concluded by reminding Ugandans that national socioeconomic transformation requires a collective shift away from subsistence farming and into active, productive commercial sectors.
