EU TO OPEN CONSULATE IN KALANGALA ISLAND TO PROMOTE UGANDA PINEAPPLES

European.Union will soon open a Consulate General on Kalangala Islands to promote Ugandan pineapple exports,Jan.Sadeek European  Union Ambassador in Uganda has revealed.

“Ugandan pineapple is the best in the world – the EU must experience it! A dedicated airport is being built to ensure it arrives fresh in Brussels,”he stated.
Ugandan pineapples are renowned for their exceptional sweetness and,, fragrant aroma, largely due to ideal tropical climates and nutrient-rich volcanic soils. Primarily grown by small-scale farmers, key varieties include Smooth Cayenne, Queen, and MD2. They are a major agricultural commodity used for fresh consumption, organic dried snacks, and juices.
Uganda pineapples are known for a vibrant yellow flesh, high sugar content, and low acidity, often enjoyed fresh or dried.
Main Varieties: Smooth Cayenne is dominant for its large size, while Queen is small and very sweet.
The Pineapple farming is a significant income source, with harvesting usually starting about 1.5 years after planting.
Exports: In 2023, Uganda produced over 8,000 metric tons, exporting heavily to regional neighbors like Kenya, South Sudan, and Rwanda, as well as to Europe.
Health Benefits: They are rich in vitamin C and bromelain, which aids in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties
Relationship between Uganda and European Union
According.Sadeek ,European Union (EU) and Uganda maintain a 50-year partnership (marking the golden jubilee in 2026) focused on development cooperation, trade, and regional security, with over €5 billion invested.
The EU is a major partner in Uganda’s economic growth, supporting infrastructure, agriculture, and sustainable development while advocating for human rights and democracy.
Key Aspects of EU-Uganda Relations:
Uganda benefits from duty-free, quota-free access to the EU market under the “Everything but Arms” (EBA) arrangement. Exports to the EU have grown significantly, driven by coffee, fish, and other agricultural products, with a positive trade balance for Uganda.
In terms of Development and Humanitarian Aid,EU is a major donor, providing over €309 million in humanitarian support since 2017, primarily focusing on refugees and host communities. Recent projects emphasize renewable energy, green growth, and digital connectivity under the Global Gateway strategy.
In Political Relations and Human Rights, EU consistently engages in dialogue on human rights, governance, and democracy, often expressing concern over democratic processes, LGBTQ+ rights, and electoral integrity.
The EU has  partnered with Uganda on maintaining peace in the East Africa region.
