The Electoral Commission has announced strict measures during this year’s edition of elections which includes stringent scrutiny of academic papers for politicians. According to Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama aspiring candidates must prove they meet academic qualifications and resign from public office by specific deadlines, or risk disqualification. The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Division in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, has intensified its environmental conservation efforts by launching the second phase of its tree planting campaign in partnership with the Natural Resources Defence Initiative (NRDI), a local non-governmental organisation. Uganda faces significant environmental challenges, including deforestation ,wetland loss and land degradation while also striving for conservation and sustainable development. President Yoweri Museveni has finally signed into law the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (Amendment) Act, 2025 that allows civilians to be tried in military courts under undefined exceptional circumstances. The announcement was made via Uganda Parliament’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, confirming that the President had assented to the Bill undoing a January 31 Supreme Court ruling that outlawed the military prosecution of civilians. The law passed by parliament on May 20th reinstates controversial clauses previously deemed unconstitutional. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics has resumed a nationwide census of schools, aiming to accurately count students and teachers to inform government planning and resource allocation. The Baseline Education Census, launched May 7 by Education Minister Janet Kataaha Museveni, was temporarily suspended due to the end of the first school term. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports, began the Baseline Education Census on April 7 ,2015. Former Police Special Operations commander Nixon Agasirwe has been charged and remanded over the murder of state prosecutor, Joan Kagezi. Agasiirwe was charged with murder, contrary to sections 183 and 184 of the Penal Code. He was however not allowed to take plea since he faces a capital offence only tried by the High Court. State prosecutor, Joseph Kyomuhendo told court that investigations into the matter are still ongoing. President Yoweri Museveni has urged cultural leaders to avoid engaging in politics but promote ugandas culture values to instill good society discipline. Uganda has several cultural leaders, known as traditional leaders, representing various kingdoms and cultural institutions. Government has signed a contract with an Egyptian firm, SAMCO National Construction Company, to build a 20,000-seat Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City. According to officials the stadium project will cost $129 million and is scheduled for completion within 20 months. Muhammad Bbaale, the Accounting Officer of NCS, signed on behalf of the government of Uganda and the National Council of Sports, while Engineer Ibrahim Abdelaziz Mahmoud Mabrouk signed for SAMCO National Construction Company. Hajat Kuluthum Muzaata Nabunya has officially announced her separation from her husband, Acram Gumisiriza, marking the end of their two-year marriage.
