In a historic milestone for Uganda’s healthcare sector, Mulago National Referral Hospital has become the pioneer among public hospitals in Uganda to attain the prestigious Integrated Management Systems (IMS) certification for ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 .
These internationally recognized standards exemplify excellence in quality management, environmental stewardship, and occupational health and safety.

During an official certificate handover ceremony held at Standards House Bweyogerere,Dr. Rosemary Kusaba Byanyima, Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital, remarked:”This achievement marks a significant milestone for Mulago Hospital—the first public hospital in Uganda to attain these comprehensive standards. It reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering quality healthcare, ensuring safety, and promoting sustainability.”
Eng. James Kasigwa, the UNBS Executive Director, highlighted the significance of this accomplishment:
“This certification underscores Mulago National Referral Hospital’s dedication to operational excellence and continuous improvement. It aligns with Uganda’s national development priorities, fostering a culture of quality, safety, and environmental responsibility that will benefit patients, staff, and the broader community.”

This remarkable achievement sets a new benchmark for public health facilities across Uganda, inspiring a culture of quality and excellence within the healthcare sector.
Mulago National Referral Hospital (MNRH) is located in Kawempe North Division of Kampala the Capital City of Uganda. Founded in 1913 as a center for treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, MNRH has grown to become a “Brand” for tertiary healthcare in Uganda.
In 1962 Queen Elizabeth the first donated the Lower Mulago infrastructure of storied block to the government Uganda and that led to tremendous growth in bed capacity of the hospital. Currently the bed capacity of Lower Mulago is 900 and Upper Mulago 700 and this makes MNRH the largest in Uganda
The hospital provides a wide range of specialized services, including advanced surgical procedures, diagnostics, and care in areas like pediatrics, oncology, and women’s health, and also serves as a center for medical research and training
