It initially operated as the National Resistance Army (NRA), a rebel group that seized power in 1986. The NRM champions democracy, patriotism, Pan-Africanism, and socioeconomic transformation, aiming for a stable, unified, and prosperous Uganda.

The NRM emerged from the NRA’s armed struggle to overthrow previous regimes, establishing a new political order based on stability, human rights, and constitutionalism.
