The High Court in Kampala has denied bail to former opposition strongman, Dr.Kizza Besigye and his co-accused Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya.
The duo, facing charges of treason and misprision of treason, has been on remand at Luzira Prison for months asked court to have them released on bail.
In a ruling delivered via email on Friday, Justice Emmanuel Baguma said it is not true as had been alleged that Besigye had clocked the mandatory period of 180 days to warrant mandatory bail.

“Having found that the applicants had not clocked the mandatory period which is the bedrock of this application, I don’t find it prudent to delve into other concerns like substantiality of sureties and ability of the applicants to return for trial as doing so will be superfluous. This application is hereby dismissed,” Justice Baguma ruled.
The judge however directed the court’s deputy registrar to consider expediting Besigye’s main case for immediate hearing to ensure justice is served for both parties.
