UGANDA,DRC CONGO SIGN NEW SECURITY AGREEMENT

Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have signed a landmark agreement to strengthen border security and enhance cooperation between districts along their shared frontier.

The deal, inked on Monday in Mahagi Territory, Eastern Ituri Province, seeks to curb cross-border crimes, regulate illegal movement of goods, and promote peace in the region. Leaders from both nations emphasized the need to address insecurity along the porous borders, which has disrupted trade and threatened stability.

The signing ceremony was attended by Gen. Taban Amin, Deputy Director General for Special Operations in Uganda’s Internal Security Organisation (ISO), and Catherine Akumu Mavejjina, MP for Elderly Persons in Northern Uganda. Representing the DRC was Col. Disanoa Laula, Administrator of Military Affairs in Mahagi Territory.

Col. Laula urged both parties to uphold the agreement to foster trade and diplomatic ties. “This peace deal will be presented to top leadership for harmonization, ensuring lasting brotherhood and improved revenue through cross-border commerce,” he said.

“This agreement minimizes petty crimes like armed robbery and cattle theft, as security will now be jointly monitored,” he said. “As East African Community members, we must work together for socio-economic transformation.” Gen. Taban Amin stressed

Robert Abak, the Nebbi Resident District Commissioner (RDC), welcomed the timely deal, noting that both countries rely on each other for trade and peace.

The pact marks a significant step towards regional stability and economic growth under the East African Community’s vision of Pan-Africanism.
